Located on the eastern side of Virginia, Chesapeake is a fairly new city - it was officially formed in 1963. Many people find that the blend of both natural flora and fauna with the modern conveniences found in city life make Chesapeake the best of both worlds. For those who love the outdoors, the forests as well as wetlands of Chesapeake are home to numerous wildlife and are a haven for fishing. With its location along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, it is also the backdrop for many waterfront properties, both residential and business.
Not only is Chesapeake a popular place with tourists, it also has the distinct pleasure of being one of the largest cities throughout the entire state of Virginia. Along with forests and wetlands, the Great Dismal Swamp is also located in Chesapeake.
Home to over seventy species, the Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge is a very popular tourist attraction and sightseeing boat tours are provided. Bird watching is also a popular sport along the Refuge as there are over two hundred species that call the swamp home. Chesapeake also has several canals that are noteworthy. The Albermarle and Chesapeake Canal provides access to and from the Bay and the Albermarle Sound and the Great Dismal Swamp Canal is the oldest man made canal operating in the United States.
Visitors to Chesapeake will also want to visit the Arboretum. With over forty-seven acres of exquisite gardens, the Chesapeake Arboretum continues to delight tourists and residents alike. Some of the must see features in the Arboretum include the vintage rose gardens and the trails that wind through over forty acres of thick hardwood forests. Since the Arboretum is a non-profit organization, there is no charge to enter.
