Named for the wax myrtle, a shrub whose fragrant oils are used for making bayberry candles, Myrtle Beach is one of the most affordable resort destinations in the United States. Did you know that Myrtle Beach offers more than 60 miles of beachfront? Fourteen million tourists have discovered and enjoy this popular east coast resort. With average highs in the upper 50s throughout the winter and reaching 90 in the summer months, Myrtle Beach also boasts more than 210 days of sun every year. In general, Myrtle Beach weather pleases many.
Not only are beaches suitable for sunbathers and swimmers, but also the area is also perfect for shore fishing, pier fishing or deep-sea fishing. In fact, there are many companies that offer deep-sea fishing packages for the adventurous tourist. The Grand Strand Fishing Rodeo takes place from April to October, and those who bring home the largest catch win an extensive list of prizes.
Many golfers flock to Myrtle Beach to experience some of the world's most famous golf courses. Professional golfers helped design many area golf courses including:
Arrowhead: Tom Jackson and Ray Floyd teamed up to design Arrowhead. Large water hazards and thick woods surround the 27-hole course.
Meadowlands: Again, Willard Byrd had his hand in creating one of the area's most popular courses. Large greens make the course attractive to novices, while the course is challenging enough to keep pros entertained.
Sandpiper Bay: Rolling fairways, wide greens, and man-made bunkers make this course, designed by Dan Maples, tricky for the novice golfer.
Theater is important in the Grand Strand area of Myrtle Beach. Carolina Opry opened in 1986 and has led the charge for new theatrical venues to open along the beachfront area. Carolina Opry offers music concerts, Broadway shows, comedy routines and dance performances. Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede Dinner and Show is another popular attraction. Dinner and a Dixieland show are melded into a full night's entertainment.
