Will the Roadways Be As Crowded During the Holidays?

Like so many other people who live in North Carolina but are originally from New York, I usually pack up the car and drive up for longer holidays like Christmas.  I do this for a couple of reasons: 1) I am a control freak and prefer to be in control of how I am getting somewhere and 2) If I know that I’m going to be home for more than just a couple of days, I’d prefer to have my own vehicle versus borrowing from mom, dad or little brother.

Why This Year May Be Different

While it is still a few months away, I’ve been thinking about my upcoming trip for Christmas.  Usually, I would drive my own vehicle, but I’ve been racking up a lot of miles for having owned it for just over a year (it’s a 2007 and has over 28k miles).  Therefore, I’ve begun to give renting a car some consideration.  As annoying as the roadways can be during the holiday season, I have a sneaking suspicion that this year may be different.  With the economy moving at a snail’s pace, increasing numbers of people are choosing to carpool, take the train or even fly (despite increases in air fare) versus drive their own vehicles.  This is leading to a reduction in the number of vehicles crowding roadways as well as recent drops in the price of gas.

Renting a car makes sense in a lot of ways because it will mean less wear-and-tear that I will be putting on my vehicle (which I hope will last me for a really long time).  Also, if you check, sometimes rental car agencies offer awesome deals such as renting in one location and then dropping it off in another location.  I think they’re starting to get it (rental car agencies, that is) in that they’re trying to make things easier for those of us who are struggling to preserve our cars as well as our sanity during these times!
