Toyota to Premiere New Alternative Fuel Vehicle
If you are unfamiliar wit the abbreviation CNG you are not alone. What it stands for is “compressed natural gas,” a form of fuel for automobiles once explored and then abandoned. Currently only Honda produces any CNG vehicles, but Toyota is looking to throw their hat into the ring after a layoff of several years. “With this concept, we are confirming our interest in pursuing CNG,” said Irv Miller, Toyota Motor Sales U.S. VP. (Source USAtoday.com). Honda is not the only company to have developed CNG cars, several other manufacturers had made an attempt but bailed out after waning interest in years gone by.
Now that Toyota is looking to produce a CNG Camry perhaps interest will be renewed in this once promising fuel source. According to usatoday.com:
[Miller] lauded CNG as cheaper than gasoline, low in emissions and more plentiful than oil. Data presented at a Toyota-sponsored conference here made the case for oil production declining faster than natural gas supplies, pointing to the need to look anew at the fuel.
Currently there are 1,000 nationwide CNG fuel stations with only half accessible to the public, but with Toyota emerging over the horizon and Honda planning to produce significantly larger numbers of CNG Civics that number is likely to change. One down side to CNG vehicles is that they require larger then normal tanks and typically have a shorter range, but this doesn’t seem to matter to those who want an escape from oil.
