The Need for Speed…but Why?
It was during school hours and the speed limit on the sign read 25mph. I was doing 30mph. So, then why was the guy in the Dodge pickup truck practically touching my back bumper?
Why Have Speed Limits At All?
As I’ve been able to witness many drivers on the roadways, both as a former police officer as well as a civilian, it makes me wonder why we have speed limits at all. It almost seems like a mute point. If the sign says 55mph, everyone is doing at least 65mph. If you’re in a school zone and actually doing the speed limit, the people behind you get pissed. It doesn’t make sense! This brings up an issue I mentioned in the last post: Are we too distracted inside our vehicles to actually obey the laws of the road?
When I would pull people over for moving violations, I would often get the excuse, “I didn’t know” or “I didn’t realize..” Perhaps then, we are too distracted. It’s like everyone is speeding so that they can get home and do nothing. What’s the rush? If we all just took the time to drive more carefully, not only would we save gas as well as general wear-and-tear to our vehicles, but we may also save someone’s life.
