A part of the Revolution

The Battle of Cowpens

The Battle of Cowpens took place on January 17, 1781 in the latter part of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. This was a turning point in the war in the South and an important part of a chain of events that lead to the Patriot victory at Yorktown, which took place on October 18, 1781 and was the battle where British General Cornwallis surrendered to the American and French troops under General George Washington.

Outdoor activities at the park

When you are here with your South Carolina car rentals, there are many things you can do outdoors. The Battlefield Trail is a good place to start. This is a paved 1.3 mile trail that includes wayside exhibits and the historic Green River Road, which was the site of the battle. The entire trail takes about 45 minutes to complete. If you prefer to drive, there is an auto loop road as well that goes one way around the perimeter of the battlefield and also includes wayside exhibits. There are parking spots with short trails to Green River Road as well as the 1828 Robert Scruggs Log House.

When you prefer to stay inside

When you visit with your South Carolina car rentals, there are also indoor activities that you can participate in. There is a visitor’s center which contains Revolutionary War artefacts, interpretive exhibits, and hands-on exhibits for kids. There is an 18-minute show about the battle that was filmed during the 225th anniversary celebrations of the battle and depicts the battle. You can get a sense of what it would have been like on the field on the day of the battle.

When you visit with your South Carolina car rentals, you will find the park is open year-round from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The auto loop and the picnic areas close at 4:30 p.m. Every year, on the weekend closest to January 17, the park celebrates its historic battle by doing firing demonstrations and a living history encampment. There are also fireworks on the weekend that is closest to July 4th. It is free to visit the park, with the only charge being to reserve the picnic shelter.
