10 Vehicles With the Worst Resale Value
When I first purchased my brand new Jeep Liberty back in the summer of 2007, I had no idea that not even a year later, the United States would be in the middle of a gas crisis. I even tried to sell it back, but despite the fact that it was still brand-spanking new (well-gently used let’s say), no one would touch it with a ten foot pole! My vehicle had officially been branded a “gas guzzler” and no one was looking for a vehicle that sucked up as much gas as mine did while gas prices were continuing to rise.
Despite the fact that I made a poor decision when it came time to purchase my first vehicle, I am not alone. There are hundreds upon thousands of people out there who make poor vehicle choices either because they’re misinformed or because they didn’t do enough research prior to their purchase. Had I had the foresight to thoroughly research the vehicles out there to find out which ones got the best gas mileage as well as which vehicles had the best resale value, I would be in a better financial position now.
Cars With Poor Resale Value
Like so many new car buyers, researching which vehicles had the best resale value was NOT on my mind; however, it is something that any person who is a buying a new vehicle should know. According to car.com, the following vehicles were listed as having the worse resale value for 2008:
- Mazda B2300
- Ford Ranger
- Suzuki Forenza
- Chevrolet Colorado
- Mitsubishi Endeavor
- Suzuki Reno
- Dodge Ram
- Dodge Durango
- GMC Canyon
- Kia Rio

lol my parents’ car is a 2006 ford fusion that still blue-books for more than they paid for it brand new! haha
i recently purchased a mitsubishi endeavor
i really like this auto, it is easy to drive roomy
and get ok gas mileage. i was wondering
what makes it a bad resale auto. i would recommend this auto to anyone. i have had
friends who hve driven it and they love it. is there something wrong with this auto i haven’t
discovered?
Don’t feel bad. I have the dubioud distinction of purchasing 4 or 5 cars in the last year of
production and all had terrible resale.
AMC Javelin, Opel GT, Dodge Dart, AMC Pacer, Mersury Zephyr Station Wagon, Nissan
GXE Van (the big oue, with the overheating
problem).
Another way to view this list is these are the top 10 vehicles to buy USED. Simply let another buy new and pay the depreciation, and then buy!
I wonder why the Endeavor is on the list. I own one and have never had to do more than change the oil and replace the tires in the first 50k miles. On a recent highway trip, I got over 22 mpg for a tank, and I usually average about 17-18 with daily use. All around, I’m much happier with it than I was with my Explorer. Seems like it’s a strange addition to this list.
You must consider the transaction price not the list price when computing resale. Example…..you buy a Dodge Ram for half of MSRP right now. Two years from now it will hold a tremendous percentage of true cost.
Missed on the Dodge Ram ….. one of Americas best kept secrets - Pickup, 3/4 ton, 19MPG - no major problem in 130,000 …. what can I say?
Every car and truck you listed, will go 200k miles with normal maintainance. In the time of ownership, these 2008 vehicles will go up and down in value, and in the end, the mileage, and condition, and second buyer will deterime what they are worth. All you do with these reports is scare people who have enough worry on their mind. If there were no depreciation, any car would be worthless, as soon as it was registered to someone, and only new cars would have value, while sitting on the new car showroom. What do you think, that you make money buying a car or truck? Maybe, Maybe, if you bought a Duesenburg from a barn, and sold it at Barrett Jackson in January. Buy the car you want to drive for the next 5 years, and live with depreciation. The fear spreaders of so called journalism, on the web, or in print media, aren’t helping you with woe and worry columns like this.
I appreciate the opportunity to comment on your subject, but half the connecting words that make a sentence complete are missing in my last comment. Mileage and condition determine the value in the end, and during the ownership of the vehicle the value will go up and down. So called journalism is spreading useless fear amoung people who have enough to worry about.
I am an Endeavor owner as well.. LOVE IT! I bought one after I rented one during a trip to Richmond, VA.. It ran smooth, very roomy and just a great ride.. Why was it on this list? Regardless, I still love (Lucille) my endeavor…
I just purchased a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500. The truck was discounted $15,000 off of MSRP. Why? Dodge is introducing a new body style for 2009. I drove the Sierra and am much more satisfied with the Ram. Sorry, but I love the Dodge and know it will be worth more than what I paid in the future.
the worst car ever–PT cruiser, i get MAYBE 15 mpg in town driving very conservative, drives rough, but fun to drive–
Own a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 with a diesel engine best truck I have ever owned get 21 miles to the gallon, lots of power and unreal resale. Don’t get it as to how this was on your list. Recommend this purchase to anybody that is in need of a great truck.

I was sucked into the Dodge Dealer for the 50% off. So what if the gas is high if the price is right. The dealer would give me 50% off the price of a second car if I paid full retail for the Ram.
I drive a 2001 Dodge Ram and am ready to replace it. I hate to be lied to so either the Chevy Dealer or the Ford Dealer will be selling me my next truck.
I do not see new Dodge Ram’s being driven all over town so I suppose I am not the only one Dodge tried to screw with their ad.
I really dont know why the endeavor is on the list cause for the money I paid (I bought it used) its worth it. its fully loaded and just great. I JUST CANT UNDERSTAND. maybe its cause of the fuel efficency which isnt the greatest (20mpg in city) it should be taken off the list.
